Mission Statement: To connect people through meals, conversations, and friendships.
Vision Statement: The Center will be a place for EVERYONE to go – to nourish body, soul & community.
The Dalhart Senior Citizen's Association was established in 1992 by a group of Dalhart's individuals and business owners with an overwhelming desire to serve the senior citizens of our community. The goal was to provide seniors with a place to gather and share a hot meal. The association bought the two-story facility from the First Baptist Church and did a major remodel and kitchen addition. The primary focus was to offer lunches Monday through Friday to encourage socialization for the senior population. The Center was very busy with activities such as quilting, exercise classes, cards and domino games. The center was definitely the place to be for senior citizens.
Over the last 30 years, technology and COVID have impacted the senior population. Newly retired people travel and spend much more time with grandchildren than in the past. Many seniors continue to work and are not looking for group socialization at this phase of their lives. Smart phones and smart home electronics have allowed seniors to stay at home and not feel isolated, because they are able to communicate and FaceTime with friends and family. Thus, the value of a senior center diminished. With the newly formed BSCC, we hope to provide a place for all ages to come and visit!
Brick Street Community Center was created to provide a place for all ages and seniors to visit. We continue to offer reasonably priced lunches Monday through Friday, either inside the dining room or at the drive-through window. The Center currently offers exercise classes, needle work group, card games, coffee group and book club. Nonprofit organizations are provided a complementary meeting space. Rotary Club, AA, Al-Anon, NA meet at the center weekly.
